Flood Resilient Garden

Site

To incorporate a piece of land purchased into the existing garden; taking into account annual flooding. We needed to develop a plan that would be incorporate flooding into the design and build.

Brief

We incorporated the new land into the existing garden, linked a new garden building and created a design that increased the flood resilience of the whole site.

Response / Design

We linked the house to the gorgeous garden building by Loyn + Co Architects and reduced the impact of sudden rainfall, through large deep ditches, swales and a pond. We designed this to act as a giant attenuation tank, holding the water in high rainfall and allowing it to dissipate. We also designed a central lawn with an open view to hold a busy family and occasional views to the surrounding land, a realised golf course. Grass hedges screen in the Summer, and then intentionally cut back in Winter, so not to obscure the Winter sun. We used a Miscanthus hedge to give seasonal screening to an orchard and wildflower meadow with Leaf Creative and Emorsgate Seeds. Wildlife was also important here, we created habitats in a large pond, sandy bank, dead hedge, meadow, orchard and drought resistant gravel planting; we have since enjoyed watching it develop and mature.
