A compact sequence of front, side and rear spaces of an end terrace property. Each space needs to work hard for a young family.
Brief
To bring three distinct areas into a coherent whole, shaped around the rhythms of family life and the need for ease of care. The garden has several entrance points with bifold doors, a dining area and a contemporary garden room.
Response / Design
The garden is approached as a connected series of moments. The side garden will become a quiet transition, where renewed planting and simple paths draw the eye through to the space beyond and towards the front door. Behind the house, the ground opens into a more generous terrace, stepping up towards a garden room. Lawns are kept open for play, while planting gathers at the edges in broad, legible drifts. Multi-stem trees introduce height and seasonal movement, offering shelter and forage for birds. Elsewhere, a gravel garden holds low maintenance drought-tolerant species, catching light and shadow beneath a birch canopy. Planting is composed in groupings; evergreen structure, softened with lavender, hydrangea and salvia, and underplanted with a quiet layer of groundcover and early bulbs.
