A long-established garden beneath Glastonbury Tor, rich with structure and history; with red brick walls, a collection of rare trees, follies and greenhouses, ponds and a grove of bananas.
Brief
To draw together three generous distinct landscapes into a coherent whole, while allowing the garden’s accumulated character to remain; for the clients and grandchildren to enjoy. Our client is an experienced gardener with a love of compost and we are thrilled to be briefed from the soil up.
Response / Design
We’ve begun the work by understanding the existing ground; its soils, its history, and the way it is already used. The design is unfolding in parts, each area considered carefully and implemented over time. Our concept design includes a walled vegetable garden, a children’s garden which references the surrounding history of the tor and earthworks, a compost garden of workshop areas and compost bays with amenity buildings for gardeners and workshops, an orchard with a Shepherds hut for writing, a terrace with a rustic pergola and screening, a front garden with meadow and native topiarised trees and of course lawns and abundant planting. The intention is not to remake the garden, but to guide its next phase—allowing it to continue to evolve as a place of making, growing and gathering.
