Brief
To create a garden that is both low in maintenance and light in its environmental impact, with a sense of permanence and calm.
Response / Design
This project has been evolving for a number of years alongside a thoughtful team of architects and interior designers and is being planted in 2026. Shade is an important layer; introduced through a bold pergola structure, more closely held terraces, and a framework of multi-stem and pleached trees. Beyond the immediate setting of the house, the garden opens into orchard and woodland. Here, planting follows a matrix approach, allowing communities of plants to establish and move together, reducing the need for intervention while maintaining a natural coherence. Arrival is marked simply; a pair of planted vessels, an elliptical space held by a Prunus serrula, and walls traced with espalier apples. The intention is for the garden to feel as though it has always belonged.
