Swimming Pool Reuse

Site

A large wraparound garden with a redundant swimming pool.

Brief

A garden for rehabilitation and recovery after a life-changing head injury. The garden had a large derelict swimming pool, which created differences in level. We needed to create a social area around a fire, a yoga studio and step-free access across the site for our client to be able to use the garden to recover and rebuild following an injury. To future proof the garden, we included design features which meant the garden would still be enjoyed by our client if they needed a wheelchair in the future.

Response / Design

We wanted to find a way to make use of some of the walls of the swimming pool to minimise the need for demolition and waste removal. Two sides of the pool were retained and the lower level dug out to create a fire pit with room for a wheelchair around it, if this was needed in the future. Paths are wide enough for wheelchair access and slopes are kept shallow enough to walk in a circuit around the garden. Step free access was built in and resin bound gravel was chosen to give a durable surface and would be reliably grippy. Planting was deep and abundant with lots of year-round interest, colour and wildlife.
